Howard announced that Artie was not in today. He would not go into any detail saying that Artie was fine, but its his business and “Artie is going to do what Artie is going to do.” Mariann from Brooklyn called in and said Artie was being disrespectful, Howard disagreed. He joked that Artie was running a mission for the CIA.
UPDATED – I thought that maybe his driving class was scheduled today (thinking his first class was in the first week of Dec) but others are reporting his classes aren’t until February.

Regardless of the annoying voice, Marianne from Brooklyn has been right about Artie for a long time.
It would be interesting to find out how much these absences piss off the “regular” people at Sirius. The grunt office folk, the ones only making like 40k/yr, yet manage to make it in EVERY day because it’s the only job they have. I bet it pisses them off a lot.

Artie clearly has issues beyond what even he states. I feel horrible for him. He’s a good, giving character. I think it’s time for a leave of absence and a trip to a place where he can get real help. He’s going to be fighting this for the rest of his life and needs to learn to curtail it, no matter what it takes. This isn’t about Sirius getting mad, or Howard, it’s about Artie. I’ve heard and seen enough, he’s crying out for help.
I love Artie, but he has no commitment to his job and his inconsistency is hurting the show. Seriously, he has been to work twice this week! On what planet would any employer put up with that? I don’t think he’ll renew his contract for Howard’s last year, and he SHOULD focus on overcoming the demons in his life.

I agree wholeheartedly with lisa who said Artie has the perfect life for an addict. He gets driven there and home everyday 15 mins tops to Hoboken. He can block everyone out, be on his couch in front of the TV with a quart of Jack and crushed pills by 12:30pm, order a pie or a hero and not have to worry about a fucking thing until he wakes up at 5:40am the next day. It’s not worth it to fight it especially if he isn’t willing to face that it’s a problem. I guess just enjoy, and maybe even admire that he doesn’t have any real responsibility, works on the greatest radio show of all times and will probably be gone within a few years if he’s lucky

Oh, and after reading through this thread today, I realized that the reason Howard or Sirius have not “done anything” with Artie is because it is too late. They have created this environment in which “reasonable” rules don’t apply to Artie. To suddenly fire him would make them look like complete fools (why now?) and worse possibly set up a litigation case from Artie – and he’d have a strong case that their inaction indirectly condoned his bad behavior.
Why? Because any other employer would have fired a guy with a substance abuse problem a long time ago. Love the guy or not, even a blind man can see that he’s not committed to ….. Anything?

I don’t think Artie is back on heroin or doing drugs. He has merely come to the realization that when Howard quits, his career will be consisting of driving a cab or working on the docks again or doing shitty comedy clubs for $100 a night. Nobody is going to give him a show on television again after knowing how unprofessional he is.

I think perhaps Howard is best doing what Johnny Carson did — hire plenty of behind the scenes writers, and let himself shine. Artie is a GREAT part of the show, but when he finally leaves (now?) maybe they just need some more silent Benjis.

It has been obvious for a couple of years now that Artie needs to go away and do some real work on himself… or he can just die… because those are the options facing him. If the things he is claiming are even slightly true (i.e. these ludricrous “mini nervous breakdowns”, OCD stuff, etc.), he has mental health issues that can’t be fixed by working his schedule (even without standup) and simply seeing a shrink for a few days per week. It requires a few weeks or even months away somewhere in a program where his sole focus is himself and making himself better. No going to a phony baloney spa. No hiring a couple of ex-cops to watch him 24-7. No spending days in bed in a fetal position.
He has said more than once that he hated the “real” rehab he did to get off coke and it is clear that he does not want to do anything like that again. Well, sorry pal, but every single one of us has to do shit we don’t like from time to time. It is life, and if you want to keep living, you don’t have much choice. He needs to man up and get it done. Quite frankly, I think that Howard or Sirius or whoever holds the keys to Artie’s continued employment needs to give him an order: Get into a full time program for a few months or you’re fired.
As for Marianne from Brooklyn, she is no better than Eric the Midget or those who think Artie should just get booted out on his ass. They all forget that he IS sick. He DOES have an real and accepted medical condition (chronic depression) that IS covered by ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) so SIRIUS has to give him the opportunity to get healed, though if he ignores that opportunity, all options are open. If he had cancer, nobody would be claiming he is disrespecting Howard by missing work. On the other hand, carrying the cancer analogy a little bit further, he can’t just skip chemotherapy because he doesn’t like it, and still expect to get better.
That fat lump is just trying to pull some shit to have an extra long Christmas break…Its gonna be a White Christmas all right, in Arties nostrils.
Everyone needs to watch the HowardTV show from today featuring 50 cent and watch Artie anytime he comes on camera. He’s obvious withdrawing from SOMETHING. Most likely an opiate. Because his demeanor and behavior is like nothing i’ve ever seen before.
Ordinarily Artie is calm and relaxed. Usually reclining in his chair or slumped forward doing something else.
But in this episode, he’s clearly fidgeting with anything and everything he can get his hands on, but mostly his hat. He’s almost constantly in motion and can’t sit still. But the BIG give away is he’s got the itch. He can clearly be seen on camera more than once with his hand UNDER his shirt scratching himself feverishly.
Point is Artie was on SOMETHING and was coming off it on the show with 50 Cent. That’s a fact. Anyone who’s been around an addict can watch him on the 50 Cent Interview and tell you the exact same thing. It’s not a question of IF Artie’s doing something. He is. No doubt about it.

Emily, There’s no question about it. Artie is using again. Optimism and good faith goes out the window if you would see him during the 50 Cent interview on HowardTV. He’s clearly doing something that he was withdrawing from on that show and it’s PAINFULLY obvious. I understand you love Artie. I love the guy too.
