Howard took a few callers this morning discussing Artie (including Pitts. Pete, Yucko and King of all blacks). Calls took place around 6:18 to 6:30 for those who want to hear the repeat. I thought Pete was a bit offsides, Yucko disagreed with Pete and gave Artie a lot of compliments and KOAB did his usual Howie pandering, not really making any point that I could tell of.
Howard mentioned watching the Hurt video three times this weekend. The video includes clips of Artie over the years set to the Johnny Cash cover of Hurt. We posted the video at this location.
Robin had admitted that she had planned out before how she would kill herself but never it took it to that next level. She had said that she threaten her mom that she would hang herself right in the doorway.

Howard claims that the person who contacted TMZ about Artie’s hospitalization, used Gary’s email address in the contact form. Howard said he knows the name of the person who leaked the story. Howard said he won’t give out the name. Howard and Gary said that TMZ didn’t post the majority of the story. Sounds like its someone outside of the stern show.

Didn’t hear it, but that that’s not much of a “reveal”. They were expressing serious doubts about that as soon as he started to disappear in December; pretty much acknowledged then that no one believed it.
Yucko was one of the few people to mention Artie early last week (“Pray for Artie” at the end of his short call). So while he’s ordinarily vile and never funny, he also cares.

I don;t think they expect anyone to not ‘feel’ for Artie. I just don’t understand why he’s mad that the story leaked. If it were anyone else, and he had the info, he would have leaked it. It’s news. People want to know. Let them judge how they should feel. We shouldn’t be told how to feel. However, the negative comments are all just cruel. Yep. Howard loves celebrity misfortune news, and loves spending hours on it a day being cruel. Robin even mentioned something about that on Thursday, now that it has happened to someone in their “family”, they feel differently. Imagine if the NY Post story was about Leno. There would be 6 full straight weeks spent on that topic.
I think, as I said, this is about Howard having to deal w/ real emotions.
In the last few years he has let his almost facist level control freak side show more and more. He knows all and everything has a simple answer in his mind. “Just sleep”, “Stop eating”, “Stop worrying” are just some of his two word answers to hard issues in people’s lives.
This leak is just another thing he wants to control completely.
Now Artie comes along and does this thing that makes no sense to him, is not simply answered and he has no control over and he has no idea how to react. Robin seems to be having real emotions about it and I had a sense this morning that Fred is alot more shaken then he lets on by this.

Howard is such a scumbag, Pretending he cannot even stand to read the NY Post article because it involves a member of his family…A member of his family who is in a horrible way, yet Howard hasn’t even contacted to voice his support, leaving it “up to Artie to call me.” So if one of Howards’ daughters stabbed herself with a Wolfgang Puck knife, he wouldn’t contact her, he would leave it up to her to call him? I also found it odd that Howard didnt reach out to Artie yet Robin and Tim had already spoken to him. Howard is the top dog of that show and the burden of reaching out to a friend and coworker in need should have fallen on him.
The question now is, where is Artie? Is he in rehab? At home? If Artie doesn’t take dramatic steps to deal with his issues, he’ll be back in the same depressive place he was on Jan 2nd. If I was Sirius, I wouldnt want Artie back unless I had some indication he was addressing his demons.

Guys, Artie needs to go to an intensive rehab, complete it with his heart and soul believing it, and needs to find something else to do with his time because the spotlight isn’t the right place for him. And I’m saying that in the nicest possible way, because it seems like it hurts him rather than helps him.

I do find it interesting that you seem to think you speak for “most fans”. You certainly don’t speak for me and I suspect that, when you say “most fans”, you are really referring to most of the insanely small (and just plain insane) minority of fans who post in the various other Stern discussion groups that pollute the internet (and, no, I will NOT plug any of them here). If you count the number of regular posters in those groups, I think you will find that it falls far, far short of the millions of daily listeners Howard has. Has Howard, or anyone from the show, at any point said that Artie’s chair was waiting for him, that they hope he’s back soon, that his job is waiting for him, etc?? I mean anything at all that states they want him back in his chair and back to work? I just seem to be missing it if they have. I’m hearing tons of get well soon, get well, needs help, hope he gets better, we love him. But…. I’m just not hearing that they hope he’s back to work and in his chair. Howard also made a comment today about Artie’s recovery being a very long road. He can still be recovering while working, so again I’m not sure if Howard actually expects the guy to come back to work or not. It just kinda seems odd at this point that not one person on the show has specifically said they hope Artie is back to work soon.
By the way, did anybody happen to see the article on (I think) the Star-Ledger online last Wednesday or Thursday? After the news on Artie came out last Wednesday morning, they apparently sent a reporter to Hoboken to get “man on the street” interviews. According to the article, a guy they identified as a security guard in Artie’s building stated that he had seen Artie that day (again, this was last Wednesday or so). Apparently (again according to the alleged security guard), Artie was going to CVS and looked pretty healthy except for walking with a limp.
Frankly, the story sounded bogus (or maybe I am just HOPING it was bogus) because not only did it have Artie out of the hospital and up and about within a few days of the incident, but it also had him AT HOME, apparently unsupervised, and taking medication (I don’t even want to guess what the meds might have been)!
I will look for the article and post the link if I find it, but, in the interim, I am curious if anybody else saw it and, if so, what they thought of it.

@Jeff, I think it is difficult for the staff because while Im sure they love Artie and want him back, what they dont want is messed up Artie back in his chair. They probably want him to get the help he needs and then return. Artie just showing up to work tomorrow is a recipe for disaster. They have already hinted at the fact that his supposed ‘therapy sessions’ were bogus. If I was SIRIUS, I wouldnt ‘allow’ Artie back into the studio until I had some indication that he was taking steps to improve his situation. They are ultimately liable if Artie hangs himself in a Sirius men’s room or has a violent outbust and stabs an intern.
It would be nice though if someone would at least say out loud that when Artie is well, and gets the help he needs, that his chair is there waiting for him and they want him back on the job. Nobody has really said anything along that line yet. Tim came the closest with the “Artie is still a part of the channels” statement.

Even though most people on this site agree the show is better with Artie, “the fact of the matter is”( A phrase that Howard uses constantly that drives me nuts), If he isn’t gone for good, he will be gone for a while. Putting Jackie and his ear pierceing laugh in the chair will probably end any chance of the whole crew resigning. Fred seems adament about it. If Howard puts Jackie in, it seems it’s a permanent replacement. If he “rotates” guest in ( I vote for George Takei first) , then Howard can at least pretend he’s holding the chair untill Artie gets better. Whoever he decides on “clearly”( Gary’s phrase that drives me crazy) they need someone in the chair to take some air time away from Robin.
I like the rotating chair idea a lot. It’s kinda like a long interview process. We would get to test out various people and see how they are on air. You keep the chair officially open for Artie, but if too long a period goes by, and he doesn’t seem to want to return, then you have a bunch of people to pick from as a full time replacement. I can’t see in any way it would hurt. Anything is better than just leaving the chair completely empty for months on end.
Jeff from NJ: I was thinking the same thing as you (wondering why nobody at Sirius is giving a very clear statement that Artie would be back on air when he was ready and able), and the only thought that I had was this: As of now, the whole staff, presumably including Artie, are only under Contract for another 11 months or so. Given the nature of the current situation, I would have to think that we are talking at the very least that it is going to take several months before Artie is in position to even consider going back to work (and, undoubtedly, he is going to need confirmation from a doctor before he can do it). Anyway, considering everything, it is a very real possibility that Artie simply won’t be mentally and physically ready to go back to work before December 2010 and, as a result, maybe Sirius doesn’t want to say anything implying that Artie will be back “in the Jackie chair” soon because that might not be the case.
On the other hand, if and when Howard and the gang sign new contracts, the silence is going to be deafening if they don’t make a very clear statement then on Artie’s future.
I am also curious if Howard will bring in some “guest Arties” to sit in the chair and fill the void while Artie is out. Doing this might send an unintentional message to Artie, but, presumably, that can be dealt with behind the scenes. The safest bet would be to bring in either (a). Guys that Artie is friends with, for example, Norm MacDonald; and/or (b). Guys who couldn’t/wouldn’t be able to take the gig full time even if it were offered, for example, Jimmy Kimmel. That way, there shouldn’t be much speculation that they are a potential “replacement”.
Don’t count on Artie being back as a regular member of the show, or even a guest. he is obviously too much of a coward.suicide is the cowards way out, don’t get me wrong here , for the time the shows been on Sirius, I’ve loved Artie, but you could see something like this was going to happen.

Like on so many other topics, the big problem here is a complete lack of information. If they want Artie back they should say so. If this is it, and it’s all over, they should say that too. This whole game of “I’ve got a secret” is maddening. If they came out and said with absolute conviction that Artie’s chair is waiting for him, and they want him back, that doing the rotating chair thing wouldn’t be that bad. They’d be doing it with everyone knowing ahead of time that Artie is expected back, and this was temporary until he gets well. At least frame it that way, and say it very clearly. Then, if everything goes bust, and Artie just doesn’t recover or want to come back months down the road, you can either pick someone who’s filled in, or just pick someone totally new, to replace the seat. We need info.

But I will say that I am so sad. I don’t know why, he’s not a family member but he made my day everyday. My family members don’t even do that. I miss him and the show is not the same. Artie’s Belly Button Lint, It’s easy to say suicide is cowardly and selfish when your mental health is “in a good place”, which obviously Artie’s isn’t, or hasn’t been in quite some time.

It is pretty evident that Artie, whether physically or mentally may not be back any time soon; in the meantime- and I am sure he will just have a group of rotating people (NOT Jackie!) sit in for maybe a week at a time. I don’ t think he would leave the chair empty.
In regards to Pete’s call, what did he say that was so negative? Because most of us like the guy, we get all sensitive because someone makes light of it? Bring back the funny does NOT equal bring back Jackie. I can’t stand listening to the old shows with Jackie, he is so annoying and not funny whatsoever. I hope Artie does what he needs to do to get better, including never coming back to the Howard Stern Show. The show is guilty of being an enabler to Artie’s vices. Bring someone else in, do a rotating chair of different guests. There are lots of other folks out there who are funny, fun to listen to. I’ve been worrying all week end when I heard that Artie was out of the hospital and walking around like nothing happened.
This is very disturbing.
His mother should have committed him to a psych hospital. Because of his suicide attempt she probably could have done that legally. Morally it was the right thing to do for her son even though he would be kicking and screaming all of the way.

Hi Ho, someone with probable knowledge already hinted above that Artie is NOT just walking around, so I feel better about that concern.
Oh that was humor? Unlike the Heath Ledger line, Artie followed it up with fake scenarios of himself fucking Toby Maguire. What did Pete follow it up with? Questioning the accuracy of how Artie was found to support his statement that if someone really wanted to kill themselves, they would make sure they got it done.
Then Pete says that Artie takes life for granted. Who the fuck told him whats in Artie’s mind. If I were to be a ass and assume, I’d say, Artie takes life so emotionally that he gets to this level in his life. But for me to make those assumptions of what Artie feels would be enormously presumptuous.

@Sal – Artie is a comedian and much like in the interview I posted, he said you aren’t supposed to be taking that shit seriously. But Pete is a pothead calling in asking Howard questions in a “serious manner”.
Look Artiefan, we know you have somewhat of a personal relationship with Artie, and Pete made statements that rub some people the wrong way. He thinks he is some kind of half-ass comedian, which no one else does. So not to defend Pete at all, you know that is where he is kind of coming from.
I think he was baiting Howard or anyone else there to talk more, or reveal more details, that was kind of what I drew from the other comments.

Helicopter Mike is real and he too has been emotionally affected by Artie’s various abuses as we all have who have put a tremedous amount of faith and love into like a family member. HCM doesn’t work for Artie anymore as after the DUI he tapered off and stopped working for him as much because he realized sadly that there’s nothing you can do for the guy.

If Artie invests his money well, he can live off that money, and maybe do some comedy writing for a TV show. He does not need to be in the public eye anymore to be successful and I do not think it will be healthy for him after what has transpired.

As far as the show enabling Artie, what I meant is that being under pressure to “perform” for the show everyday, I think, is what makes it difficult for someone like Artie to quit doing the things that got him on the show in the first place. He’s a funny guy, especially when talking about his stories from when he was a mess. But he needs to let all of that go now, and I don’t think he would be able to let it go by returning to an environment that can be brutal and demand that people bare their souls on a daily basis in order to get some “quality” air time.

But the funniest thing Jackie ever did was shamelessly overcharge for shipping, handling and cost of his awful CDs, and try to badger people into buying two or three copies of each, or more than two when they only wanted to get one. And that was only funny because the rest of the Stern cast could then ridicule the idiot.
Is all of that going to be all that funny after what has happened with Artie? It will be too obvious that Jackie is being brought back as a mercy booking for this last year.

When I listen to the audio of Robin’s News from December 9 of last year, I hear in Howard’s voice that he is fed up and is serious about retirement.

After listening to the December 9 audio you can tell Howard knows things are bad, but you can also tell that he is horrified by it. Maybe he is like my family, unable to tell a junkie (my sister) the truth. It is a horror to have a sibling or loved one addicted to drugs. It is simply a horror.
Not necessarily nasty or sadistic, but he does ALWAYS make fun of people at their expense, even himself. After a long time of having your faults brought up as a punch line, and really, becoming known for your faults, it has to hit a breaking point. I know what Jackie did for the show. I am about the same age as Artie and have been a listener for years. I know he made Howard funny a lot. The writing, the notes, the work, all good, but listening to him made me want to puke. See, I’m not that nice. lol. But Artie did a whole different thing for the show. As Jackie made the show easier for Howard with his writing, Artie made it easier for him with his stories and anecdotes. There was less for Howard to say which made his 5 hours easier. Plus he got a new fan base too. Just to hear Artie’s stories really made my day.
Look, Howard is a genius in my opinion and I think he will be able to handle this but throwing Jackie in that chair after all that “I am worth more” crap, I would rather listen to more gay stories about Richard and Sal or hear more about JD’s non-life. At least Artie said he was a lucky guy to be there. Too much entitlement from Jackie for my taste.
I think Howard is tired and has every right to be at this point in his career. He’s done it all and has nothing to prove and he will probably exit at the end of the year. But for the time being, Artie is really important to a lot of people. I have read so many here and elsewhere. If he can’t come back, and it looks like he probably can’t, just don’t stick Jackie back again. Come up with something new. A revolving chair seems fair. It also seems fresh and new, something some of these old dogs could use.
I’m not sure if this was for attention. Why wouldn’t he just OD on drugs the easier way. To actually stab yourself numerous times is a whole new level of hate. I don’t actually know that he will be okay. No matter what your fame is or financial situation is sure doesn’t mean you can make it in this world. Artie feels he owes everyone everything, he has nothing left for himself. Listening to his latest interview, I really got that.
The only thing Jackie brought was his imitation of Robin. And everyone’s imitation of Jackie was hilarious. I agree with whoever said bring back Billy West.
I’m praying Howard will continue for a few more years. He has always said “this it it” towards the end of his contract. He makes me laugh every day.

All this talk of jackie coming back is unfounded. Everything they have discussed over the past several years indicates he is not wanted back in the chair. Out of generosity, howard threw jackie a bone and gave him the joke hunt show, and we all know it aint good.
If this is Howard’s last year, go out in style. No jackie, no artie, fill the chair with guest hosts, which I think has fantastic potential, and call it a day.
artie is a one of a kind comic but maybe he should rethink his stern commitment. much as i miss him, it seems he will have to make this terrible episode ‘a bit’ which will take him down the same road he’s been on. wishing artie well. hoping for his return to the show. it ain’t the same w/out him!

Howard’s got his head down and is focused on the goal. A “Sidekick Of The Week” would be fine — Howard does have a fondness for the Mike Douglas Show model after all. But we know Howard can stick it out on his own if he has to. I hope he re-signs, but either way I am grateful for a show that has given me so much entertainment over SO long! More than 20 years of filling dead air!
I don’t think there is ANYONE who has ever provided that much entertainment, period. You can NOT count ordinary disk jockeys (not entertaining to begin with, shows consist entirely of music), and no one else has talked as long or with close to the humor. TV shows, no matter how long lived, don’t even come close to racking up the hours. I suppose maybe the radio Gamblings had a record of some kind, but each of them was as deathly dull as a post.

Okay, for once I am going to go out of character…place the puppet on the shelf.
Here is my take on Artie.
Its obvious he’s is a troubled person. He over indulges in everything he does…cigarettes, eating, drugs, drinking, etc….all in hopes of forgetting his father’s death. A death that he feels responsible for as he could have been holding the latter. (I know the whole story of him being a freshman at Seton Hall and was cutting class at the time of the accident).
For the past 7-8 years he has been responsible to someone other than himself: Howard and the cast……AND ALL OF US WHO LISTEN AND HAVE FOUND A SORT OF FRIEND IN THE FAT FISHERMAN!!
He took on the roll because he is smart enough to realize the insane opportunities this show brings far out weigh the downside of having to work Monday-Thursday from 6AM to 11AM.
Let’s face it, he showed Jackie the Jew Hater how a real comedian could parlay the third chair on the Stern Show into a multi-million dollar gig….without having to sell shitty t-shirts after doing 3 shows at the Haha Factory in Des Moines Iowa on a Saturday night in February.
But the price of having to be responsible to someone else was too great in the end. He’s tried time and again to get fired…fighting with Teddy or JD, sleeping on the job, taking sick day after sick day after sick day and coming to work either high or drunk as well as the classic “Bro” fight with Howard are just a few examples. Any of us in the real world would have been fired long ago for one or two of these. I truly think Artie felt Howard would let him go at some point.
But guess what, Howard loves/craves/needs the tension to make his show work.
I listened to just about all of Part 3 of the History of Howard Stern over Christmas. Nearly every bit they replayed had a basic premise of an argument between two key players. A broekn Artie’s tragic life creates drama for today and fills the gap Howard needs tomorrow.
And the key to Artie’s success is that HE IS A REAL PERSON. Its not schtick (ala Benji) its not a pre-fabbed written bit (ala Jackie) or a pre-taped phoney phone call (ala-Sal/Richard). Its that real person persona that we fell in love with over the past 7-8 years.
Artie took drastic measures to end his responsibility to Howard, and most especially ALL OF US. Very similar to that of Tiger Woods…..but that discussion is for a different message board.

There have been a lot of stupid Jackie posts recently (whether by one jerk or several) but actually the puppet who posts here is usually okay, the ugly “die fat fisherman” part notwithstanding. I have no issue with the puppet. Cleverness and timing makes up for a LOT of negatives. (Which kind of explains Howard’s career too.)
“Love” in regards to the Puppet is a strong word. I’d say some of the time he is “funny”, much of the time he is “tolerable” and the rest he is “inappropriate”.
