Sorry for getting to this story late, I had missed last week’s wrap up show and some fans wrote in about it. Thanks for the heads up everyone.
On the 6-10 wrap up show, Gary said that he had talked to Artie and his family a bunch of times since the Penthouse article came out and that they were pretty upset about the “update” at the end of the article.
Here is an excerpt:
“Lange has been laying low since the suicide attempt, spending time at home with his mother, Judy, and his sister, Stacey, who reports that Artie is “still in bed, and not speaking more than five words a day.”
Apparently, Stacey had made the comment back in January to a friend, who she didn’t realize was a reporter. She had no intention of talking to the press about Artie. Gary says Artie is in a different place since then (January) and he talked to Artie a week ago for about an hour.
Now, when I posted the Penthouse interview, I tried to verify the update personally. I contacted the author, who told me Stacey’s comment was from the past month (March/April). Hopefully, the author can clarify the details and I can post it here.
I hope and pray that Artie IS in a better place. The true fans wish him all the best and a speedy recovery.

I miss Artie, the show is flat out not as good without him on it. That said, I’m starting to accept the fact that he’s just not going to return. Howard acts like the guy was never there, and only makes comments that are pre-approved by the Sirius Legal Dept. None of that is any indication that he’s welcome to come back. It was great while it lasted.
Jeff It sure seems that way does’nt it. I sure hope your wrong but Howard and the HSS seem not to want to talk about the “Artie” subject at all. I really hate to think he will never come back but I do still hold out hope that he willl return sometime. Maybe in a limited way…. who knows….. Get Well Art!!!
The show sucked with Artie too. When Howard developed his elitist attitude and started basically telling the fans FU I dont care if you like the show or not that was the end of the Howard Stern show as we knew it. Howard puts little to no effort into the show anymore. I’m so glad I cancelled my subscription to Sirius. But as Howard would say “WHO GIVES A FUCK I DON’T CARE AS LONG AS I GET PAID” I guess if I was getting what he gets paid I wouldnt care either.
You know I heard this the other night when I was half asleep, I wasn’t sure if I had dreamed it! So glad to hear this great news!
Artie come back! if I hear Robin and Hord talking about Dancing with the Stars, or how much Howard loves his dumb as a rock model wife, I’m gonna stab MYSELF in the stomach!
Why does everyone believe that Howard and Co. should be telling us ANYTHING about Artie at all? By all accounts, his family asked that Howard NOT discuss the situation and they are trying to respect the family’s wishes. In fact, one could argue that Howard and Gary have said too much! If I try to kill myself, I sure as shit don’t want my co-workers jawing about it on the radio. I imagine Artie is living one day at a time right now – perhaps one minute at a time in the dark hours – and is hopefully not worrying about the HSS. I also think they are not even in a position right now to discuss whether or not Artie is coming back, or filling the Artie chair. Mel Karmizan just said on CNBC that he is noncomittal on whether Howard was worth all the money Sirius paid for him, so suffice it to say that contract negotiations are not going well. If and when Howard re-signs, then they will make a statement.

The last contract Howard signed at KROC was signed at the last minute (before expiring). Then, Mel moved on to the unhappy marriage with Leslie Mooves and Sumner Redstone.
While Mel landing at Sirius may have seemed like kismit, I now hear the same back-handed compliments and bullshit…and this guy gets a pass. He might have “saved” or “resurrected” Howard after NBC but he continues to roll over Howard. This last CNBC interview about Howard not being worth “every penny” is such predictable horsehit.
Go fuck yourself with a creamcheese dildo, Mel. Like Tom Chisano(sp?) before you, as you run off Howard Stern, you’ll soon be totally irrelevent. Wonder what Chisano’s doing right now…besides watching paint dry.
When Gary said this I smiled and almost cried…to hear Artie was not as bad as Penthouse made it out was sooooo great. And I think that Howard has fallen deeper into his neurotic stuff w/ no Art ie there to verbally slap him back into reality. If Artie is there he tells some story about bugs and Howard does not obsess on two ants like Monday. Robin and Fred have given in and given up on making Howard human

Why are there so many haters in the world? The Stern show is a business thats here to entertain the masses, not a religion. If you aren’t entertained don’t subscribe but shut the hell up!

Don’t know if I agree with most people here. Unless Gary is exaggerating…one hour is a pretty long time for guys to chat on the telephone. If it was a couple of dames that’s another thing. But what the hell are Artie and Gary talking about for a full fucking hour over the phone? Yankees/Mets? The World Cup? Updating each other on family lives? They can cover all those topics combined in about 7 minutes. I happen to think the door hasn’t closed on Artie’s time on the HSS. They had to have been talking about a possible return if they were really on the phone for that long.
Artie is toast. He’s nothing unless he’s using. When he uses he’s very funny and interesting. He’s not coming back.

Since the “update” that Penthouse made was incorrect as far as the timely goes, how about deleting it from the site! I could do without bullshit!
I had to chuckle when on a recent show (was it yesterday or monday?) a caller mentioned that ‘if Artie was there, he would sure have a comment’ and Howard & Crew didnt even grunt or acknowledge it…They just kept quiet and the guy continued on with his call.
WHAT FUCKING ASSHOLES. They are now just ignoring the fact that Artie was on the show, not even talking about him or anything. Douchebags!
Kudos to Adam Curry for blasting Howard and Mel with his comment about the cell phone aps not having carrying the HSS. ”Mell knows it would break the illusion”…HAHAHAHAHA! Too true, you put the HSS show on the droid/iphone/whatever and everyone starts to wonder: Gee, what IS so special about satellite radio? Its streaming over the internet and into my phone…Why do i need this radio? LOL. Good one Adam.

Whats not reliable? The penthouse article was published… I reported… Gary tried to play janitor, I reported. Each side of the story is legit.
Howard did it again today…That caller ‘Wheels’ mentioned one of ‘Arties Friends’ and Howard just hung up on him. Nice.
Wheels was referring to Pete Domenick from POTUS. He wants to plug Pete’s talk show. Everybody needs to let the conspiracy shit drop. Artie needs time off. A year would be good. Think about it. HS isn’t keeping secrets or misleading you. He can’t say “Artie thinks he might be able to return in July, because if he doesn’t it’ll be “Artie is in terrible shape and needed to postpone his return.” Artie is not in bed all day, and he speaks to friends on a routine basis.
I’ve heard that Howard is keeping quiet about Artie because Artie’s mom asked him too…of course I have no inside info, I’m just a guy from Oregon who loves the show, but I have read that a couple of times….but I’ve also heard that Artie’s mom and sister are pissed at Howard.

@Pete: I can only go by what I hear on the radio. Im only a fan out here in radio-land, and the lack of any sympathy from Howard and Company as well as the obvious uncomfortable silences when Artie is mentioned is how I am forming my opinion. I dont go to other sites for ‘conspiracy’ info, just hear things for myself.

I have been reading this website since Artie’s suicide attempt for any information.Thanks for posting all the updates.My opinion on the near blackout on the HSS on Artie is that Howard wants to protect him by keeping the matter private and that the subject is such a downer for a comedy show.I hope Artie returns at some point,if only as a guest.I listen to old Artie clips on You Tube,he was really funny on the show,too bad his success on the show didn’t make him happy.
While I agree with you Rusty… I also gotta with FeeFi&foFum, there has been a lack of sympathy. Maybe there is no perfect way to handle the situation…. talk about him without “talking about him”. But i know how angry i felt in the beginning of the year when it just seemed the show wasnt giving it the attention that the fans deserved.
How bout saying caring, supportive stuff about him instead of ignoring it all the time? Artie spent many years on the show and all of a sudden it was over without barely a whisper. A sad way to end his legacy on the show… and im not talking about what Artie did – but how the show handled it.

i was listening to the Bill Simmons BS report podcast this morning and he was interviewing Chris Connelly of ye ole MTV news fame and he mentions Artie Lange twice in the first 5 minutes. I know Bill Simmons is a Stern fan but cant wrap my head around why he just says his name. I know its random but just wanted to let you know this.
I don’t think it is the end of the legacy of Artie on the show and Howard knows it,I think he is giving him his space to recover.The reaction on the show to the Artie situation has been bizarre to me also,but I think it will be explained by Howard at some point,hopefully when Artie is back in the studio.Strange they haven’t done the”Best of Artie”show,maybe it is because it will remind fans how much better the show was with him.The best clip from “Wasted Week”last week was Artie telling the story about the kid he sponsered and later met.It was Artie at his best.I still enjoy the show,but it was so much better with Artie.Like a previous post mentioned,what was Gary talking to Artie about on the phone for an hour recently?It sounded hopeful to me that Artie is doing better and may be appearing on the show again at some point.
You would think a professional might suggest to Artie not to go back to the lifestyle that obviously wasnt making him healthier, not to mention put himself in front of the Stern audience and get hated on, made fun of and have to deal with all of that emotionally — not good. I couldnt imagine Artie coming back this year at the very least…. and of course, Howard doesnt even know what he is doing yet.
Also, I think Artie has a year to year contract… one could guess that he doesnt have an active one at the moment, either didnt resign or broke agreement. Howard said he is welcome back but he isnt an employee of Howards… he is of Sirius.
It just seems like a lot for him to come back.
Listen, I think a lot of the feelings people have here that people call “conspiracy” comes from a few things:
1) Howard did not come on and talk about Artie that first day right out of the box. He has said why but it still set a tone. I for one was a little uneasy w/ the fact that they laughed about a party while we all were twisting inside about a friend. Even if he said they could not talk about it, if he said it first words out of his mouth that Monday in January, it sets a better tone.
2)The overall feeling that Artie is being forgotten. While life goes on and the whole show can not be “We miss Artie” for 5 hours, maybe a bit less of a feeling that he is being brushed aside. Again I think this is Howard’s control freak/OCD coming out in that Artie was not in control and so almost like the body rejects a foreign object, he must get rid of the thought of Artie.
3)The overall feeling that the show lacks something now and that Artoe pushed Howard to work. Many people see he is mailing it in lately and on top of that he has said in so many words that he hears that critique and does not care. The other day he repeated himself almost word for word three times in the show, repeating subjects over and over just to fill time. Artie would have not let him do that as he would have taken him in a new direction. Robin is too busy with her 1000000 causes and Fred I think is slightly cowed by Howard, afraid to speak up. Fred also has never been a voice on the show. Benjy could do that but Howard has so little respect for his talent, unrighteous so, that that is not an option. So we just sit and wait till December and the end.
I think this all could be solved if Howard had Stacey on the phone one day and let her talk. If SHE said that it was their choice to be this silent then that would be it…..Howard I think is hiding behind the family and their wishes as a way to avoid talking about it.
I found an a clip from sveral years ago when they were goofing on Mike Tyson…it was laugh out loud funny!! Artie does one of the great Tyson impressions. It made me want Artie back even more!
On this mornings show Robbin let it slip out that Artie was indeed fired. It was during Chris Rocks rant when Rock was joking about Howard feeding Artie heroine to get him off the show it was Robin who said in the background when everyone was laughing that “he fired him”.Every once and awhile Robin lets something slip and it makes sense now as to why they never bring it up. I kind of remember that During one break Artie was told to check into a REAL rehab or dont come back. Well Artie didnt check into that REAL rehab, so I’m now wondering if infact Artie did get fired, and thats why Howard is having such a hard time talking about Artie or even going to visit. It just seems that Artie’s name is taboo with Howard on the show. Also I wonder if Howards sudden need to pray has something to do with Artie. Maybe he is having some real issues with how the whole thing went down and he feels somewhat responsible for Arties current situationl……. who knows…. all I know is that I want Artie to get better and be happy with his life and get back on the show if thats what best for him…..

Howard did the same thing with KC. It took like 2 years to really find out what happened. Howard is afraid of legal ramifications and also he wants to be the center of attention.
I think deep down inside Howard was envious of Artie(I mean he was voted most popular on the show) and now the free speech hypocrite hangs up on anyone who says the name Artie. I think the fans need call up and jst go nuts on the phone saying Artie Lange over and over again like they do on the live broadcasts with Baba Booey.

It amazes me how many still cling to the faintest of hope that Artie may be back or that Howard will out of the blue open the books on Artie.
It ain’t happening. seems painfully obvious that the Stern show is sticking to some legal mumbo jumbo gag order regarding Artie.
How many times does Howard have to say he loves Artie before you believe him? I know Howard has changed alot in recent years (phony, Hollywood, kissing former enemies’ asses), but I still think he cares about Artie in his weird way, and silence is a form of protecting Artie (privacy, etc).
Your right (or desire) to know what’s going on does not over ride Artie’s privacy.

Even though HS has said he loved Artie a bunch of times, I just don’t think he handled it properly. He could have signed off the air every so often with a “hope you are feeling better buddy” – something… anything….. to let Artie and his fans know he is also thinking about him. This would have still respected the wishes of Stacey and Mom but shown an ounce of compassion for Artie.
Agreed. The way the show has handled Artie’s departure has been extremely odd. Again, we’ll never know why they act this way, but safe bet it’s a legal thing, they wish to protect his privacy etc.
Adding further to all of this speculation is that even outside the stern show world, in the entertainment media, you do not hear a single peep about Artie. It’s like he’s dropped off the face of the earth. That is really odd because any celebrity worth anything has a PR person who works with the media, even when a celeb goes to rehab, just so that they don’t completely fall off the radar. I find this even more perplexing than the stern show clamming up about him.

Do I find it “odd” how this has been handled on the show, without a doubt. The thing is and I don’t think anyone here can say is what has went on behind closed doors when this took place. We don’t know what kind of agreements were made, what the legal dept said that could be said and what could not.
Please do not take that as me sticking up for Stern and staff. As I think they could have handled things differently long before anything happened.
I’m just a huge Artie fan and enjoyed him so much on the show. I truly hope he is doing better and is in a better state of mind then when this took place. Do I wish he was still on the show, yeah. Do I hope he comes back, yeah. But if he’s in a better place not being on the show then I’m happy for him. If not coming back to the show is better for his physical/mental health then that’s great. I’ll miss hearing him (if the show continues that is) but knowing he’s healthy and maybe at some time in the future we’ll get another book or something. I just wish him well and truly hope he can get out of this dark place he’s been in.

Thank you for finally saying what I’ve been saying for a couple months now. I’ve been an Amazon.com affiliate for many years on other websites. Yes, I tried to do link ads through Amazon to sell Artie’s books, videos, etc… you get a tiny kick back if anyone clicks this link and it results in an ad. Do I make any money? No… I dont think anyone has clicked the link and sold anything. Why do I keep it up? Because its advertising for Artie’s goods.
Does this website COST me money to run? Yes it does. So the LONG SHOT that I were to make, say $100 … which I havent…. that would cover my hosting charges for a year… not to mention my personal time I invest on here and twitter…
Anyone with a calculator could see that I have lost money over the years….
Matt, while I understand your desire to defend yourself to the idiots that don’t know what they’re talking about, and I’m sure I would get just as pissed as you and respond, you should just save yourself the trouble and delete their comments. Anyone with half a brain understands why you’re doing what you do and realizes a blogging website isn’t a big money maker. Some people will bitch and complain about anything just for the sake of bitching and complaining…I’m sure it stems from a miserable life of their own. If they don’t see their comments and/or get a reaction from you, they’ll go away and look for another topic to bitch about. One of the negatives about the internet and modern technology is the emergence of the “keyboard tough guy”.
